Media arts is an area
of artistic work only now coming to the fore in the region's artistic life.
Local films have been produced in the Caribbean since the 1950s, but many
are unknown even within the region, due to limited distribution. Video production
and computer-based filmmaking/editing software have made it possible for
more people to get involved in what has traditionally been a high-cost area,
and some experimental work has been produced in video and TV formats. Training
facilities remain almost completely absent though, and local regional filmmaking
is understandably hampered by lack of access to training and equipment.
Many Caribbean filmmakers study and produce their work abroad, and the local
support structures for a film/AV/TV production industry do not exist in
most of the region's countries.
The listings in this section include some of the region's film, audio-visual
and television resources, facilities and organisations. For additional information
see the "Film Caribbean" segment of the Caribbean Eye video series on Caribbean
culture by Banyan. Banyan also has a one-hour video titled "The Dish Ran
Away with the Spoon" on the effect of US television programming on local
culture - www.pancaribbean.com/banyan
We have made a start with compiling information for our listings, and encourage
